What We Believe

We are so wrapped up in “doing;” God calls us into “being.” We were once God’s innocent creatures in a beautiful garden.  Through our wanting more, before the time, we severed fellowship with God and God left us to our own devices.  Witness today our disordered and dangerous world.

But God would not leave us without rescue. He sent His own Son Jesus. Jesus paid the price for all our disobedience on the cross on a hill called “Calvary” in Jerusalem, nearly 2000 years ago.  He did this so that we might not only be restored as God’s creatures, but now be adopted as His sons and daughters.

The Bible calls our disobedience “sin;” the rescue is called “salvation.” The condition for adoption as God’s children is that we believe and accept this free gift in His Son Jesus.

One more thing: God is still God; that is, He is sovereign Lord of the universe. With accepting God’s free gift, we also acknowledge that His Son Jesus is rightful Lord over all.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins but He did not stay in the tomb.  He could not stay dead because He is God’s Son, co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit.  He rose from the dead and showed Himself alive to His disciples many times over a forty day period.  He then ascended into heaven and is coming again.  This time he will not come as a helpless infant but as Judge and King.  You can be sure there will be some changes in the sorry present state of our world—He comes to set all things right.

Until then, we, as His church, continue His work in the world—doing good and calling people to believe and trust Him.  We hold that the Bible is God’s inspired record of His character and dealings with us.  We celebrate baptism as the first rite of a new life in Christ and communion as a remembrance and sharing together of His death, resurrection life and coming again.
